With a unique wetland ecosystem and a large palm-shaped water body, Ashtamudi lake is the second largest estuary ecosystem of the state. The lake’s topography with its multiple branches resembles eight braids, hence ‘Ashta’, meaning eight, and ‘mudi’, for hair.

The estuary is home to 43 variant species of mangroves. The three major recognised islands of Ashtamudi are Munroe Island, Thekkumbhagom island and Chavara island.
